Electrical Warrant of Fitness

Caravan, motorhome & food truck electrical WoF

An Electrical Warrant of Fitness (WoEF) confirms your caravan, motorhome or food truck's electrical system meets safety standards and is suitable for connection to 230-volt power supplies.

The short answer

An Electrical Warrant of Fitness (WoEF) confirms a caravan, motorhome or food truck's electrical system meets safety standards and is suitable for connection to a 230-volt supply. WorkSafe says a WoEF is valid for four years. Honest Electrical carries out caravan, motorhome and food truck electrical WoF inspections in Dunedin.

Why It's Necessary

Why is a WoEF necessary?

Legal Compliance

Under the Electricity (Safety) Regulations 2010, anyone who hires out a caravan, motorhome or mobile food van, or supplies electricity to one, must make sure it has a valid WoEF.

Safety Assurance

Mobile installations often operate in confined, damp environments. Regular checks ensure electrical systems are safe and capable of handling their intended use.

Peace of Mind

Knowing your vehicle has passed a professional inspection reduces the risk of unexpected issues, and most powered sites require proof of a valid WoEF before granting access.

Regular Inspections

The role of regular inspections

While a WoEF is valid for four years, annual or pre-travel checks are recommended, especially before long trips or if the vehicle has been idle for extended periods. Electrical systems can degrade over time, and regular inspections ensure early detection of potential issues, particularly for mobile food vans or older caravans where wear and tear may be more pronounced.

Schedule inspections well before your current WoEF expires
Keep a record of past inspections and electrical work
Be proactive addressing any electrical issues, however minor
A current WoEF is a commitment to safety and responsible ownership
What Counts

Which vehicles need a WoEF?

Caravans and motorhomes

WorkSafe lists caravans, camper vans, motorhomes and camper trailers as connectable installations, meaning vehicles with an electrical installation that may be connected to an external supply.

Food trucks and vending vans

Food and drink vending vans and trailers are connectable installations too, as are mobile classrooms and similar vehicles.

Hire and campsites

Anyone who hires out a connectable installation, or supplies electricity to one, must make sure it has a valid WoEF. Hiring one out without a valid WoEF is an offence.

Imports

Buying or importing a caravan or motorhome

Electrical installations in many imported vehicles do not meet New Zealand standards. WorkSafe says a WoEF cannot be issued for a vehicle fitted with non-standard sockets, such as UK plug types, and that many imports need electrical refitting before they can be issued a WoEF and connected to a New Zealand supply.

FAQs

Common questions

What is an Electrical Warrant of Fitness (WoEF)?

A WoEF confirms that the electrical installation in a caravan, motorhome or other vehicle meets safety standards and is suitable for connection to a 230-volt power supply. For caravans and similar vehicles it is issued in line with the standard AS/NZS 3001.

How long does a WoEF last?

WorkSafe says a WoEF is valid for four years. We recommend an annual or pre-travel check as well, especially before a long trip or if the vehicle has been parked up for a long time.

Do food trucks and mobile food vans need a WoEF?

Yes. WorkSafe lists food and drink vending vans and trailers as connectable installations, alongside caravans, campervans, motorhomes and camper trailers, and anyone who supplies electricity to one must make sure it has a valid WoEF.

Do I need a WoEF to hire out a caravan or motorhome?

Yes. WorkSafe says it is an offence to hire, lease or offer to hire or lease out a connectable installation that does not have a valid WoEF.

Can an imported caravan get a WoEF?

Sometimes, but imported vehicles are often not wired to New Zealand standards. WorkSafe notes that a WoEF cannot be issued for a vehicle with non-standard sockets such as UK plug types, and that many imports need electrical refitting first. Talk to us before you buy or import.
