Your Install

What goes into an EV charger installation

The charger you choose, including 7 kW single phase and 22 kW three phase options
The cable route between your switchboard and the charger location
Your electrical supply and how much capacity your switchboard has
The protection devices the installation needs
Where the charger is mounted and how exposed that spot is to the weather
The paperwork, including a Certificate of Compliance

Every property is different, so we give you a clear quote after assessing yours. That way you know what you are paying for, including any work needed on your switchboard or supply before a charger can go in.

Safe And Compliant

Installed safely and documented properly

Installed by a registered electrician

WorkSafe says a wall-mounted charging unit at home must be installed by a registered electrician. Older wiring may also need upgrading, because high-draw devices can create heat that older wiring was not designed to cope with.

The right circuit and supply

The EWRB recommends a dedicated sub-circuit from the main switchboard, rated for the expected load, and says the installer must make sure the incoming mains will not be overloaded for chargers above 15 amps.

Paperwork you keep

You should receive a Certificate of Compliance. The EWRB advises attaching the charger's supplier declaration of conformity to it, as assurance the equipment is suitable for New Zealand.

FAQs

Common questions

How much does a home EV charger installation cost?

It depends on the charger, the cable route from your switchboard, and whether your switchboard and supply need any work first. Because every property is different, we give you a clear quote after assessing your home. Read more: How much does it cost to install a home EV charger in New Zealand?

Is a 7 kW or 22 kW charger right for my home?

A 22 kW charger needs a three phase supply, and it only helps if your car can accept that much AC power. For many households a 7 kW charger covers overnight charging, but it depends on your car, your driving and your property. Read more: 7 kW vs 22 kW home EV chargers: which one suits your car and home?

What happens during an EV charger installation?

We assess your supply and switchboard, agree a location with you, install a dedicated circuit and the charger, test the work and hand over the paperwork, including a Certificate of Compliance. The details depend on your property and the charger.

Can my switchboard support an EV charger?

Often, but it depends on your incoming supply, your other loads, and the condition of and space in your switchboard. Some homes need no changes, some need the charger to manage its charging rate, and some need work first. We assess this before installing anything.

Do I need an electrician to install a wall-mounted EV charger?

Yes. WorkSafe says a wall-mounted charging unit at home must be installed by a registered electrician. It also advises that older wiring may need upgrading, because high-draw devices can create heat that older wiring was not designed to cope with.
